Default Building a 1:48 haywain

Hi,
I am embarking on a diorama project that requires a 1940 (ish) English Haywain.
The scale I am building in is 1:48.

I would like to be as accurate as possible and I need some help.

Are there plans available for this type of vehicle?
Are there any tips on making wheels that small?

Thank you for taking the time to read this and replying if you can. I really appreciate it.

Scott.

Smile 1:48 Haywain

Scott
Yes there are plans for the haywain available, John Tompson has a book out called Making Model Horse Drawn Vehicles and within that book their are a set of plans, However they are in 1/10the scale. You should be able to reduce the plans to the 1/48th scale you need. Hope this helps.

Hi Scott

Click on the link below and go to the 5th item down.
Plans of the Cotswold Harvest Cart from “Wild Horse Books & Art” in the USA.
They only offer the plans in 1/8th scale, so you would have to reduce the plans by six times smaller to get 1/48th scale.

http://www.wildhorsebooks.com/thompson_page_2.htm

The next two links show what is available from “Hobby’s” in the UK.

http://hobby.uk.com/horse-drawn-vehicles/the-john-thompson-collection/cartcraft-design.html

http://hobby.uk.com/horse-drawn-vehicles/the-john-thompson-collection/farm-carts/cotswold-harvest-cart-1-12th.html

If you bought plans in 1/12th scale you would have to reduce them by 4 to get 1/48th scale.
Notice that the body length of Cotswold Harvest Cart is 10 ft. long (that doesn’t include the shafts)
The body length in 1/48th scale would be 2½ “long, with the wheels about 0.687” in diameter.

I Hope this helps.

Scott,
It may be possible for you to make your 1/48th model just from the drawing in the previous post!
You have the body and wheel dimensions. If you wanted to know how some of the other sections were arranged; then just ask.

Note that the front and rear harvest frames are removable and slot into the steel brackets each side of the body.
